Frequently Asked Questions - Search Engine Optimization and Promotion

Below are common questions we are asked about search engine optimization related topics. If you require more information, please feel free to contact us and we'll be happy to help.

What are Key phrases?

When someone types a search term into a search engine, we refer to this term as a key phrase. For example, someone trying to find a plumbing supplies wholesale company in Illinois may type 'plumbing supplies wholesale Illinois' in the Google search box - 'plumbing supplies wholesale Illinois ' would be the key phrase here.

How do you apply search engine optimization for a key phrase?

There are many factors involved in search engine optimization. An important factor for most search engines is that the content of your site matches the typed in key phrase - the page you are reading now has been optimized for the key phrase 'search engine optimization'. Your site should therefore be written with certain key phrases in mind. We have access to a large database that records every search made on the top search engines, enabling us to pinpoint the optimal Key phrases that are associated with your business.

What makes a good key phrase?

A good key phrase is one that actually gets typed in by users, but has very few other web sites competing for it. A key phrase like 'web site design' is certainly typed in thousands of times every day, but there are tens of thousands of web sites competing for this phrase so it would be hard to get a good ranking for this - also, a phrase like this is not specific enough for a web design company's needs - someone searching for 'web site design' may simply be searching for tips on good web site design. A better phrase to base your search engine optimization on would be 'web site design companies Chicago' or 'web site design companies Illinois', which has less sites competing for it, but still receives quite a few business related search requests every day. Of course, this is just one of many factors that determine your ranking - repeating a key phrase many times will not improve your ranking on its own.

What other methods of Search Engine Optimization do you perform?

It is important that search engine optimization is applied to all aspects of the web site design, including page file names, directory structure and page layout. We ensure, as a matter of normal procedure, that the complete structure of your web site is search engine friendly.

You've suggested we change the wording of our site content to help search engine ranking - we don't really want to do this!

That final decision is yours to make - basically, all changes we make to your page copy are designed to improve your search ranking but to also read well for your visitors - by omitting many of these features, you will definitely lose ranking. For companies not wishing to adjust their site text for the sake of search engines we suggest looking at alternative promotional methods such as paid advertising, affiliate programs, etc that are not dependant on your search engine ranking.

What is link popularity?

Search engines (especially Google) measure your site's importance by looking at who links to your site. Each site that links to you is classed as a 'vote' - you get a higher vote if the site linking to you is both related and also considered important by the search engine. Other ways to improve link popularity are to approach webmasters of other (subject related) sites to exchange links with you.

What is spam and do you use these techniques?

Absolutely not! Spam refers to methods some companies adopt to deceive search engine algorithms, by exploiting 'loopholes' in their systems. These methods only tend to work for a few days (if at all) and in most cases lead to a ban or at least a severe ranking penalty - most search engines have a Spam reporting procedure and many companies will not think twice about reporting your site if it utilizes spammy techniques (especially if their site had been pushed down the rankings by yours!). Spam includes doorway pages, invisible cloaking, invisible text and overusing of chosen keywords. Spam guidelines are very clear, and it is easy to avoid using these underhand techniques.

What Search Engines do you submit to?

We submit to a number of major search engines; Google, Inktomi, Alta Vista, Lycos, AlltheWeb, the directory ODP which also powers many other engines, Go-Guides and JoeAnt. By submitting to these engines, you are also included in Yahoo, MSN and AOL search results. As part of our dedicated Search Engine Optimization and Promotion services, we can also locate your industry related directories and submit your sites to these. Please note that our standard submission service is for a single submission to each individual search engine. We have no control as to when your site will appear in the engine's index - this is determined by the engine itself and varies dramatically. To guarantee fast inclusion, it is now normal to submit to a search engine's Paid Inclusion Program - as fees for this vary, please contact us for more details.

Why only submit to these - there are thousands of engines out there?

While it looks very impressive to offer 'submission to 50,000 search engines', the reality is that 95% of Internet search traffic is handled by only a few search engines. Many of these so-called '50,000 search engines' merely exist in order to collect your email address for spam purposes, and certainly do not have any actual people searching on them.

Is it necessary to submit to search engines - wont they find me anyway?

If you have links to your site from another site already in a search engines index, then yes, there is no need to submit - in fact, it has been argued that this may give you a slightly better ranking. We can of course discuss this in more detail at the start of your project.
